PayChoice customers hit with malwares through fake emails

Payroll processor PayChoice is said to be investigating a breach in which customers received targeted e-mails purporting to be from the company but were designed to trick people into downloading malware.

Workers received e-mails last week that directed them to download a browser plug-in or visit a Web site so they could continue accessing the Onlineemployer.com PayChoice portal.

The Malware in the download and on the Web site turned out to exploit security holes in Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash, and Adobe Reader.

The e-mails were targeted to individuals and included their user names, login IDs, and partial passwords, thus increasing the chance that recipients would be likely to fall for the ruse.

Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar, Haryana, India.

Prior to joining GJU, Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya was a Research Scientist at Sariska Technologies for almost 4 years. He received his B.E. (Hons.) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Computer Science from the BITS, Pilani, India.

Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya received M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Bangalore University in 1996 and 1998 respectively.

Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya’s research interests include software testing and reliability, Quality of Service issues in wireless and wireline networks and Voice-over-IP. His academic interests also include Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their application to business and management.

Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya has notable international consulting and training expertise in software engineering (modelling, processes and quality), information architecture, service-oriented architecture, enterprise globalisation, web services and mobile business.

Dr. Kaushal Kirit Vaidya received the Best Paper awards at International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE) in 1994 and at International Conference on Reliability and Safety Engineering (INCRESE) in 2003.
